What is dental sedation?

Fear, stress, anxiety (or a combination of all three) over dental procedures is very common. Whether you have very sensitive teeth and gums or have had a previous bad experience at a dentist, there are a number of reasons why people experience dental anxiety.

Our dental sedation is highly effective at relieving the anxiety, stress and discomfort of complicated dental procedures. Read on to find out more about dental sedation in Sydney, its benefits and whether it’s right for you.

Dental Sedation has a few names: sleep dentistry, twilight treatment and intravenous (IV) sedation. At the Dentist at 70 Pitt St, we offer IV sedation, which makes lengthy or complex dental treatments more comfortable and easy for you. It can also help to reduce dental fear, stress, discomfort, memory and awareness of the procedure.

What are the different types of sleep dentistry?

There are 4 main types of sedation dentistry techniques that can be administered before most dental treatments:

  • IV sedation – administered intravenously into the forearm or the back of the hand
  • Oral conscious sedation – an oral sedation medication is taken about an hour before the treatment begins
  • Nitrous oxide administered with a breathing mask just before the treatment begins
  • General anaesthesia – differs from oral sedation as the patient is unconscious and must be administered by an anaesthesiologist

Please note that at The Dentist at 70 Pitt St we only offer IV sedation.
