The Anxious Client

Dental experiences are often highly emotional. The dentist is the one health professional who gets closest to you, most often. Everyone is assumed to be suffering from or to be at risk of dental disease, hence everyone needs to see a dentist on a regular basis. Our first experiences in the dentist chair can shape our attitudes towards the dental profession, dental treatment and even our own dental health. True phobias of dental treatment are also common.

Whether our fear of the dentist has a deeper root in our earliest experiences or in our overall psychological make-up, breaking the cycle of trauma being associated with the dentist is essential to one’s recovery.

If you only see a dentist when you have a toothache, you usually face root canal treatment or an extraction every time you see a dentist. If you never see the same dentist twice, you do not have time to develop a trusting relationship before you have a significant dental intervention. The unfamiliarity of your surroundings and the person treating you is often more uncomfortable and worrying than the treatment itself. When this is combined with a toothache and the unexpected but imminent significant treatment, resulting stress can be unbearable.

If you see a dentist regularly and give yourself time to get to know the person treating you and the room where treatment is performed, you will feel more comfortable in the dentist’s hands. You may never come into the practice skipping with joy, but you will slowly get used to the idea of being in the room. We will guide you through this process.

We want you to take control over your health and through education, continuous support and reassurance, we can eventually achieve this. We have enough time to spend with you and ease you into a routine where all you need from us is a six monthly check up, clean and praise for your efforts.

We make an effort to relax you with our sincere, warm approach in our soothing environment. If this is not enough, we will not judge you. We have an excellent pool of affiliated professionals who can contribute and help with your treatment.
